The Most Powerful Tool of Your Life
by Steve Manning
If a life is worth living, it's worth recording. And because you're a very
special person, I want you to start recording your life right away. I want you
to start your journal today, and start harvesting all the benefits. I'm sincere
when I tell you that your journal will become one of your most important tools
when it comes to becoming a better person.
But don't misunderstand me. I'm not talking about a diary. I'm talking about
a journal. There's a difference. In a diary, you record what happened to you
today. In a journal, you record your thoughts, ideas, phone numbers, answers to
questions, or questions you need answered. Your goals, your objectives, your
hopes and your fears are also placed there.
Your journal goes with you everywhere-on the bus, in your car, by your bed.
It should always be by your side, because you never know when the thought or the
idea of a lifetime will pop into mental view. But more than that, it's a tool
you can use to actually improve your life. I'll show you how in a few moments.
Realize that your journal can be any size or shape. There are no rules. And
as you go along, you'll change the shape of the journal to suit your needs. You
may start out with a simple notebook, and move to a hardcover version because it
allows you to write on your lap. Or you may move to a three-ring binder because
you want to move things around. No rules, so just grab anything and start.
First suggestion, put your name and address as well as your phone number on
the first page. Because you'll be taking it with you everywhere, your journal
can be misplaced. A horrible thought, but you want to have the best chance of
having it returned. I mention that there is a reward for the safe return of my
journal.
Next, start on page one. Write the date, time and the place you are making
the entry.
Ask yourself a few questions to get you started. What do you hope to
accomplish today?. Why? And what's your long-term goal? As you do things, or
experience things, write them in your journal. Ever watch a cooking show and not
taken down a great recipe? Now you have the means to record that recipe. Put it
right into your journal. Notes to yourself, your to-do list, that guy's phone
number, and what you're getting from it as well.
At the end of the day, what did you accomplish, how does that make you feel?.
How could you improve? What would you like to do tomorrow that would make you a
better person?
Now for the real power of the Journal...
Go to the back of your journal. Synopsize everything you wrote today, and
place it in an index you create. Don't worry, it doesn't have to be
alphabetical, so don't worry about organization. Your index is just the fastest
way to access ideas and information you've placed in your journal.
I put down the general idea, and then I list the pages that have those items
on them.
Here's a look at part of my index: Recipes 8,12,25,66 Book ideas 3,10,17,24
Names and addresses 5,12,19 Entertaining ideas 1,14,21 Dinner guests
2,9,10,11,25 Marketing ideas 2,4,6,7,8,11 Joint venture thoughts 8,9,10 Seminar
strategies3,4,18 Now, anytime I want to review some marketing ideas, I know
exactly where to find them in my journal. If I want the names and addresses of
people, I have them, too.
The index is what transforms the journal from a simple recording device, to a
real tool to improve your life.
My final note is that you should review your journal every day. You'll be
absolutely amazed at how it can keep you on track and headed toward your goals.
Don't wait, do it right now!
