Know someone who's graduating? Doesn't matter what he or she is graduating
from, it's a big deal to make it all the way through high school, college, grad
school, trade school, or whatever, and he or she deserves a party! Like all
parties, the guest of honor's personality is a factor when planning a great
graduation party.
Where
The location is determined by what kind of party it is. If it's a family
party, a barbeque in the back yard or a nice dinner party (served buffet style
if you have a lot of guests) is always nice.
Invitations
As always, invitations should reflect the kind of party it is. A neat
invitation idea for a graduation party is to create invitations that look like
diplomas. Get preprinted scroll paper, or you can get clip art and fonts from
the Party Invitation Idea page on the site. Roll them up and tie them with
ribbons. Make sure the ribbons are the class colors.
Costumes
Get some pictures of the graduate(s) in cap and gown, but otherwise, casual
dress, no costumes. (Unless the party has a theme that calls for them.)
Favors
Gift certificates rolled up as diplomas. Class year tassels. Small framed
photos. Anything nostalgic.
Decorations
Helium balloons in bunches (or scattered around the party room) with
streamers - balloons and streamers should be in class colors. Metallic colors
are also nice (gold and silver). Hang a sign that looks like a diploma or scroll
that announces congratulations to the graduate(s) on the front door or in a
prominent place at the party. Use star confetti on the table(s) and a graduation
centerpiece - metallic colors that announce the year are nice.
Food
Unless you're having a sit-down dinner, theme or barbeque, general party food
is perfect. This includes chips and dip, fruit and veggie platters, finger
sandwiches, wraps, meat balls, Mini quiches, pigs in a blanket, stuffed
mushrooms, egg rolls, cheese sticks, chicken fingers, desserts like cookies,
brownies, cupcakes, etc.
Drinks
Always have iced tea, sodas, and juices on hand. Whether beer and wine are
offered is a personal choice and may hinge on the age of the graduate.
Cake
A diploma cake of course! Or you could make a cake in the shape of a
graduation cap or in the shapes of the graduating class year. Or a nice sheet
cake decorated with the class colors and year.
Games
* "I Knew Him/Her When..." - each guest writes down a favorite memory of the
graduate.
* "Advice for the Graduate" - each guest writes down advice for life after
school - can be funny, nostalgic, etc.
What's written can be put into a scrapbook with some photos as a gift for the
graduate.
Entertainment
Background music is nice - it should be music the graduate favors. If your
party is going to have dancing, be sure to stock up on dance music and hire a
band, DJ or brush up on your DJ skills!
A graduation party can take many forms, and there are just general ideas. Be
creative and use the ideas on this site. Congrats to the graduate, have fun!
